The two days leading up to Elizabeth’s birthday were a whirlwind. With Warren greatly improved, Pete was back to work, and I’d put in a big order with him. It took care of the main dish, but there were lots of other things to make. Zara helped me make potato salad using an old family recipe Gabe had given me – I prayed her help meant it would turn out okay – and we shucked corn, so it was ready for boiling. I decorated the inside of the house with pink and purple streamers and cleaned up the back yard so I could set out extra chairs and tables. I blew up balloons and hung them from every surface I could think of, attached a banner to the house over the back door. It was a huge undertaking, and I was busy from morning until bedtime – with Elizabeth trailing behind me every step of the way like a little shadow – but totally worth it, because everything was ready when I woke up the morning of the twenty-second.

“Happy birthday!” I exclaimed when my daughter stumbled groggily into the kitchen.

She was dragging Billy Bear behind her as usual, and I found myself wondering if her birthday present would affect her bond with the stuffed animal. I hoped not – although it was strange to admit – because I loved seeing her carry that bear around, listening to her sing to it, and watching their tea parties.

My daughter’s face broke into a huge grin as if she’d just remembered it was her birthday, and she bounced toward me. “I’m four!”

I swept her into my arms, hugging her tightly. “You’re so big. I can’t believe it.”

When she tried to wiggle out of my arms, I kissed her cheek and released her.

“I’m hungry.” She skipped toward the kitchen table.

I trailed after her, smiling.

My thoughts were on the upcoming events as I scrambled eggs for Elizabeth. The party was at two, and Pete would bring the meat with him and Jenni – I was so glad Warren was well enough for them to come. Everyone we knew would be here. Kiaya, Doug, Zara, Lexi, and Mike. Rick and Eden and the kids, Lisa and Gabe and their children. Max, Ari, Ryan, Brian. Even Jace. And others, too. We’d have a full house – well, yard since the party was going to be outside – and I had bubbles for the kids and a few games planned, and there would even be a cake thanks to Rebekah. We’d had to use homemade applesauce instead of sugar since we didn’t have that, which also meant no frosting, but Elizabeth didn’t know the difference. She’d never had sugar, anyway.

“What do you think you’re going to get for your birthday?” I asked my daughter as I set her eggs in front of her.

“A pony!” she cried.

I smiled but rolled my eyes. “And what would you do with a pony?”

“Ride it,” she replied in a matter-of-fact tone. “And it could sleep in my room.
